The Wiggles n Wags team is so thankful to have been a part of an amazing dinner and information session hosted by our friend and client, Patti Dunham. We spent the evening furthering our pet care education by learning about the benefits of holistic pet care from Dr. Karen Collins, VMD, the owner of Holistic Pet Healing, with offices located in Doylestown and Langhorn. Her services are focused on providing gentle, compassionate care for dogs and cats alike. As a licensed veterinarian who respects all aspects of medicine, and works closely with other veterinarians who practice mainly conventional or western medicine, her passion is holistic pet care.
Holistic pet care focuses on the animal as a whole; mind, body and spirit. The goal is to provide treatment to patients in a gentle and individualized way, and can be integrated or blended into your pet’s general care plan. As a holistic practitioner, Dr. Collins always strives to do what is best for her patients at any particular point in time – meaning it might be all holistic treatment, all conventional, or most likely, a combination that best suits your pet at that very moment in time.
One of the biggest takeaways from our dinner together was learning that acupuncture is able to help pets with the following health issues:
- Arthritis and weakness
- Herniated and slipped disk issues
- Back and neck pain
- Paralysis due to IVDD
- Disorders of the balance center
- Fever
- Seizures
- Ligament and tendon injuries
- Vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite
- Cancer – to stimulate appetite, support the immune system, relieve pain, suppress tumor growth
- Adjunct treatment of many chronic diseases including kidney failure and diseases of liver, lungs, eyes
- Behavioral issues and cognitive dysfunction (senility, dementia)–especially when combined with Chinese herbal medicine
In her practice, the holistic options that may be used are:
- Acupuncture – to restore the body to its natural balance
- Chinese herbal medicine
- Western herbal medicine
- Nutritional supplementation-generally using Standard Process and Veterinary Botanical products
- Dietary adjustment-Food therapy
- Acupressure
- Energy healing–Reiki, Healing Touch for Animals
- Flower essences-especially helpful for emotional issues
- Laser Therapy – Laser stimulates the release of natural pain-killing chemicals within the body to promote long lasting pain relief
- Aromatherapy/ Essential Oils – Essential oils can be administered via diffusion into the air, petted on the animal, or even given orally
We are excited about partnering with Dr. Collins going forward to promote awareness of the additional forms of health care available to our clients. For more information about Holistic Pet Healing in Doylestown and Langhorn, please visit Dr. Collins’ website and let her know that we sent you!
